Barry Sowers
Barry was previously a corrections officer in North Carolina for several years
as well as a carpenter, sheetrock finisher, and youth director for his church.
He came to Crossroads in 2003 working with the Winds of Change program and
then helped to start the Alternative to Detention Program in July 2004 called
Real Life. He and Madison are now living here in Georgia
fulltime.
Barry trained German Shepherd dogs for several years in obedience. He has a
strong love for all living animals.
Barry’s hobbies are complimentary of his skills in woodworking. He enclosed the
pavilion creating a log cabin effect for the Real Life program. His talents
brought us a second area for the Winds of Change program that will be a screened
in area. And his work of art is the playground, which includes an 18 X 16 foot
deck, with a 10 X 12 Playhouse and a wrap around porch! It also includes a
large and small slide; rock climbing wall, rope ladder, chicken ladder,
fireman’s pole and lots more. Of course every playground has to have a swing set
or two, monkey bars, teeter totter, and gymnastic bars! We’re ready for
birthday parties spring, summer and fall.
Barry built the 10-stall petting zoo area
which really added to the convenience of connecting with animals for the teens
in our program.
His other interest is in photography and
he is pursuing this avenue through classes.
